Hi guys, so far we have told you a lot about the effects of the plastic pollution problem and how you can contribute to making the earth a little bit more plastic free. However today I would like to tell you about someone who started out just like you. His name is Boyan Slat and he is 23 years old.
Boyan started out just like us, he saw a problem and started thinking about how he could help to solve it. Boyan first saw the problem when he was on a vacation to Greece, he was at the beach he and noticed that there was a lot of plastic in the ocean. The following years he started thinking about possible solutions. If he had time off from his studies, he would work on an idea that could help clean up the plastic.
All this thinking eventually resulted in the prototype for a machine that would use the ocean currents to collect the plastic. He founded the Ocean Cleanup Foundation and raised money, which resulted in a prototype that has been tested in the north-sea. In mid-2018 the first ocean clean-up operation will be carried out in the Pacific Ocean.
This is considered a very big innovation, that can contribute to making the oceans plastic free again.
And of course I realize that not all of us will be able to contribute to solving the plastic pollution problem on such a big scale. But I do think that the story of Boyan shows that you can make a very big impact by dedicating some of your free time to making the world a better place.
